Frequently asked questions

Answers before you ask

Safes, transfers, timelocks, plans, and privacy — the short answers, grouped.

Getting started

What is a SafelyShare safe?

A safe is a secured folder containing photos, documents, and instructions that you share with one recipient.

Do both people need a SafelyShare account?

Yes. The sender and recipient must each sign in to the SafelyShare mobile app before connecting their phones.

Which devices can I use?

Safes are created and received in the SafelyShare app on iPhone and Android. The web dashboard on safelyshare.app works in any browser for your account, your timelocks, and your plan.

How do I install the beta?

SafelyShare is in open beta: iOS installs through TestFlight and Android through Google Play open testing, as soon as each track is live. The install buttons appear on the open beta page as soon as each track is live, together with what we would like you to test. The web dashboard on safelyshare.app works today — create a free account and sign in.

Sharing & transfer

How do the phones connect?

The two phones connect directly to each other: over the same Wi-Fi network, or over Bluetooth if the receiver switches on Bluetooth sharing. The sender scans the QR code shown on the recipient’s phone, then the encrypted safe transfers between them.

What happens when the QR code refreshes?

The recipient’s QR code refreshes every 30 seconds. As soon as a new code appears, the previous code becomes invalid. A transfer that already claimed a valid code can still finish.

Can I share a safe with multiple people?

Each safe has one recipient. To share with someone else, create a separate safe, subject to your plan limits.

What does the recipient see?

The recipient already holds the encrypted safe on their own device. They see its name and when it can open, but not the contents. When the timelock expires the key is released and they can open the files.

Timelock

How does the timelock work?

The sender chooses a timelock interval and extends it while the safe should remain closed. If the sender can no longer extend it, the timelock eventually expires and the recipient receives the key needed to open the encrypted files. SafelyShare does not detect death or incapacity.

When can the recipient open the safe?

The recipient can open the contents when the timelock expires. If you extend the timelock, the safe stays closed.

How do I extend a timelock?

You can extend a timelock in the SafelyShare app, in the web dashboard, or through the link in the reminder e-mail. Pro also extends timelocks automatically from your phone in the background.

What if I forget to extend?

You are reminded before a timelock expires. If it is not extended in time, the timelock lapses and the recipient receives the key — which is exactly what the timelock is for.

Does SafelyShare know when something happens to me?

No. SafelyShare does not detect death or incapacity. The only signal is whether a timelock is extended in time.

What if I lose my phone?

A completed safe remains on the recipient’s device. You can sign in again to manage your timelocks, but SafelyShare cannot restore files that were never transferred or no longer exist on either device.

Can I stop sharing?

Yes. You can remotely destroy a shared safe, keeping you in control of what you have shared.

Plans & billing

What is included in the Free plan?

Free covers up to 2 safes, manual timelock extension, and 7-day and 1-month intervals. No trial and no payment details are required.

What does Pro add?

Pro adds unlimited safes, automatic timelock extension, and flexible timelock periods. Individual Yearly costs €9.99 per year; Family Yearly costs €29.99 per year for six accounts in total, including applicable VAT.

Is there a free trial?

Eligible new subscribers get a one-month free trial. Trials convert to the selected yearly plan and renew automatically unless cancelled. Trial eligibility is determined separately by Mollie, Apple, or Google.

Why is there no trial with iDEAL?

The free trial is not available with iDEAL due to technical limitations. It is available with card, PayPal, Apple Pay, or an in-app purchase. An iDEAL purchase charges €9.99 for Individual or €29.99 for Family immediately and automatically renews once each year at the same price until cancelled. These charge and renewal terms are shown before checkout.

Does it matter where I buy Pro?

The plan is the same either way, but it is managed where you bought it: a purchase in the App Store or on Google Play is managed in that store, a purchase on the website is managed in your SafelyShare dashboard.

How do I cancel or withdraw?

Cancel a web subscription in your dashboard, or in the App Store or Google Play if you bought it there. Within the statutory withdrawal period you can also use the withdrawal form, which works without signing in.

Privacy

Are my files stored on SafelyShare servers?

No. Safe files are encrypted on the sender’s device and transferred directly to the recipient’s device. The server stores account and safe metadata, the recipient public key, and the wrapped key the timelock releases — but never the safe files.

Do you track me?

There is no analytics or tracking in the beta builds. SafelyShare stores only what your account, your safes, and your timelocks need.

Who do I contact about my data?

Privacy questions and data requests go to the privacy e-mail address on this page. The privacy policy explains what is stored, how long it is kept, and which rights you have.
