What actually happens
This is what SafelyShare does today: what reaches our server, and what never leaves your phones.
How your safe is locked
Every safe gets its own random 256-bit key, made on your phone. Your phone encrypts everything in the safe with AES-256-GCM before it is handed over to the other phone over a direct connection.
The app seals that safe key for one person, using their phone’s public key. Their private key stays encrypted in the secure storage of their phone, so the safe key can only be opened there.
The key to your safe is end-to-end encrypted. SafelyShare cannot read it.
Phone to phone
The two phones connect through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Both of you sign in. The other person opens Receive and shows a one-time QR code, which you scan to pair the phones.
The locked safe then moves across the same local network. When that is not possible, a Bluetooth bridge carries the same locked safe.
Everything is locked before the handover and stays locked until the safe opens. SafelyShare never receives any safe files.
What our server keeps, and what it cannot read
Our server never receives or stores what is in your safe. It keeps your account, the settings of each safe, the other person’s public key, and the safe key in a locked form that it hands over when the safe opens.
Stored on the server
- Your account: identity, verified e-mail state, password hash, preferences, and account history.
- Each safe: its name and description, how often you extend it, the date it would open, your extensions, and who it is for.
- The other person’s public key, and the locked safe key the server hands over when the safe opens.
- Your devices, push tokens, the times your phone extended your safes automatically, sign-ins, and security logs.
- Subscription state: plan, status, renewal dates, and provider identifiers.
Never on the server
- What is in your safe. It goes from phone to phone and is never uploaded.
- The key to your safe in readable form. SafelyShare cannot read it.
- The other person’s private key, which stays encrypted in the secure storage of their phone.
Extending your safes
You choose how often you extend a safe when you make it. Every extension moves the date forward. You can extend from the app, the web dashboard, or the link in a reminder e-mail. You can also get a push or e-mail reminder before the date.
You choose the extension period and you stay responsible for extending. If the date passes, the safe opens for the person you chose, automatically and for good. Extending only works while the safe is still closed.
Changed your mind? Deleting a shared safe permanently deletes its key from our server, so it can never open.
SafelyShare does not know what happens to you. The extension is the only signal: the safe opens because you stopped extending it.
Free and Pro
Free gives you 2 shared safes, extending your safes yourself, and an extension period of 7 days or 1 month. Reminders warn you before the date.
Pro adds unlimited shared safes, your own extension period, and automatic extension: while you use the app, your phone extends your safes for you in the background.
Automatic extension depends on an active Pro subscription, your settings, phone activity, connectivity, and normal service operation. It is not a guarantee that a safe stays closed.
Receiving a safe
Right after the handover, the locked safe is on the other person’s phone. They see who it is from and the date it would open, but nothing inside until then.
When the safe opens, the app fetches the key and opens the contents on their phone, and nowhere else. A safe is always for one person.

What is a SafelyShare safe?

Are my files stored on SafelyShare servers?
No. Everything in your safe is locked on your phone and handed over straight to the other phone. SafelyShare only keeps what your account and the extensions need.
When does the safe open?
On the date shown as “Stays closed until”. Extend it before then and the date moves forward. If you don’t, the safe opens for the person you chose.
